Franklinton

Franklinton is a neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio, located just west of the city center. Franklinton was the first American settlement in Franklin County in 1797 and served as the county seat until 1824. As Columbus grew, the settlement was annexed and incorporated in 1859. The Scioto River is bounded on the north and east by Franklinton, on the east by Harmon Avenue, on the south by Stimmel Road and Greenlawn Avenue, and the west by Interstate 70. West Broad Street, one of the city’s two main thoroughfares, is its main thoroughfare.

Because much of the land in the neighborhood is subject to flooding from the Scioto and Olentangy rivers, a floodwall is required to contain the rivers and protect the area from flooding. The low-lying bottom land was ideal for farming, and the river connected directly to the Ohio River. The floodwall, completed in 2004, sparked growth in East Franklinton. Three public housing projects were demolished, with former residents relocated to other areas. The developments are mostly luxury mixed-use structures, which have resulted in significant gentrification in the neighborhood. Bed Bug Exterminator Columbus

History

The replanted town was laid out in blocks containing four lots in a square, each measuring 99′ wide by 115′ deep. To encourage people to move to the new settlement, Sullivant offered free land for anyone willing to build a house along Gift Street, near the eastern edge of his plat. Along with platting and settling the town, Sullivant also built several structures out of brick and glass from Philadelphia. These buildings included a courthouse, a brick home to impress Starling (who was wed to Sullivant in 1801), a brick church, and the first bridge across the Scioto River.

Franklinton was designated as the county seat of Franklin County when it was formed from Ross County in 1803. During the War of 1812, Franklinton served as a staging point for General William Henry Harrison’s Army of the Northwest, which grew the town’s population. Following the war, the community expanded as the country’s railway system expanded, and a new state capital, Columbus, was built on the opposite side of the Scioto River. Columbus‘ rapid growth led to its designation as the county seat in 1824, and the city annexed Franklinton in 1859.

Scioto Peninsula

The Scioto Peninsula is a geographical peninsula on the Scioto River’s west bank. The land was part of the early Franklinton settlement and is still primarily considered part of the neighborhood, though it is sometimes referred to as Downtown Columbus by some. Due to park improvements and the establishment of COSI, the city government first designated the land as part of downtown in 1998. However, the Franklinton Plan of 2003 acknowledged that residents perceived the space as distant and separated from their neighborhood and recommended plant- and tree-lined corridors to connect the areas visually.
